The Honorable Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer
A decade ago, shortly after Nancy and I became friends, she helped open a door that would change the course of my life. I think back to the earliest days of my doula practice- a time where I had very little support. Nancy not only recommended me for my first health equity position in Historic Sistrunk, trusting my potential before many others did, but she also cheered me on during my interview and I just knew she was advocating for me when I left. That opportunity became a foundation for the work I continue today in perinatal justice, maternal health, community organizing, and advocacy.
Nancy was the kind of leader who made people believe they belonged in the rooms where decisions were being made. We organized together in the streets, shared ideas about community engagement, and dreamed about what more equitable systems could look like. Whenever I had a new idea, Nancy listened. Whenever an opportunity arose, she thought about how to bring others along with her. She understood that leadership was not about status—it was about creating pathways for others to lead.
Throughout her life, Nancy embodied a rare combination of brilliance, humility, courage, and compassion. She believed deeply in public service, community empowerment, and ensuring that people felt seen, heard, and valued. Her impact extended far beyond the titles she held; it lives on in the countless people she mentored, encouraged, and inspired.
The work of Birthers of Civilization exists because of many people who invested in me along the way, and Nancy was one of those people. Her faith in my leadership helped shape the path I walk today. To honor her legacy, I intend to name our future Reproductive Health & Equity Coalition in her memory, carrying forward the values she championed: justice, public health, civic engagement, community care, and collective liberation.
I also ask that you join me in supporting the Nancy Metayer Endowment, established by her family and loved ones to preserve her legacy and support those closest to her as they navigate an unimaginable loss. Any contribution, no matter the size, helps ensure that Nancy's commitment to service and community continues to impact future generations.
Thank you for helping keep her memory, her work, and her light alive.
